The Back Story

I decided to use the Covid forced slowdown of musical performance and activities to further my passion for writing original music. Composition was actually my first musical love, before pursuing performance seriously. About a half year before Covid, I revised this love with a preliminary effort in writing this 3 piece suite. Please forgive my mistakes. I am writing at a fairly quick pace and it often takes a long time to perfect the performance of a piece to the point where it is really ready for a recording for CD. Even then, mistakes can find their way in and multiple takes might be required. These performances are all live recordings for an audience.

The 24

After getting back into the groove of composing I decided to undertake a truly ambitious project. I am currently writing 24 preludes in each of the major and minor keys. Currently I’ve written about a dozen with another half dozen in sketches. Some of the compositions come quick, like Prelude No.1 which I wrote in a day and spent another day revising and refining. Other compositions take place over weeks or even months, like prelude No.3.

There are existing a few examples of sets of preludes written for the guitar (much like the tradition of preludes written for piano ie, debussy, scriabin etc.). For instance, the set of preludes by the great Ponce come to mind. The preludes I am writing are more similar to the preludes written by, say Villa-Lobos, in length and proportion. They function less as a set and more as stand-alone pieces; Individual essays for me to explore the tonal possibilities of the guitar in their respective keys.
